TRG Talk: Project Management - Technology & Project Management

Nowadays, there are so many platforms and applications helping us in managing the project, such as: Gantt chart, Constant connectivity (Cloud, Social media, mobile, …), Seamless workflow (Office 365, SharePoint, Outlook, JIRA, …), Collaboration tools (Yammer, Skype, Hipchat, JIRA, Slack, Trello, …) and Project Management Software. But in this seminar, Rick chose to focus on introducing key applications that represent for Collaboration tools and Project Management Software.

Collaboration tools

Including 8 main tools:

1. Slack: Improve communication with your team / enable you to work remotely but still stay in touch with your team. Clear, real-time communication that keeps everyone in the loop.

2. Yammer: a social network for business, Yammer provides a platform for you to communicate and collaborate privately with your colleagues.

3. Appear.in: you want to see all your team's smiling faces, right? That's not always possible when working remotely, but online collaboration tool appear.in is the next best thing.

4. HipChat: HipChat is a private hosted chat service that is designed to help your team collaborate more efficiently. As a business owner, you can set up a group chat with your team that you can always access and review. HipChat ensures that your organisation can avoid any miscommunication and redundancies.

5. Skype: an instant messaging app that provides online text message and video chat services. Users may transmit both text and video messages and may exchange digital documents such as images, text, and videos. Skype also allows video conference calls.

6. Google Hangouts: There will be times when you need to gather your team for a meeting. If you’re running your business on a budget, Google’s Hangouts might be the tool for you.

7. GoToMeeting: Video conferencing and collaboration solutions made easy.

8. RealtimeBoard: An endless online whiteboard for enterprise visual collaboration.

The best 9 Project Management software

There are 135 software listed on Wikipedia but in the seminar, Rick only introduced the best 9.

1. Trello: Based on a system of 'cards' (which are essentially Post-it notes), you can categorise and order text, photos, drawings and mockups whichever way you want.

2. BaseCamp: The “godfather” of project management, Basecamp was created when 37Signals couldn't find a project management app that wasn't insanely complicated, so they decided to build one on their own.

3. ZoHo Projects: A simple project management app that can help teams streamline their upcoming work and task.

4. Workbook: A software suite for project and resource management, CRM, collaboration and file sharing, forecasting & accounting.

5. Microsoft Project: Helps to streamline projects, resources, and portfolio management. Used by 20+ million users.

6. Wrike: Quick overview of team’s workload and deadlines. Project planning and dashboards. Real-time newsfeed and activity stream.

7. Scoro: Projects & tasks, contact management, quotes, team collaboration, billing, and reporting.

8. EasyProject: Easy, visual and intuitive, equipped with useful functions such as Gantt chart, risk management, portfolio management, project templates, etc.

9. Jira Core: Out-of-the-box business project templates to manage simple tasks and complex workflows.

At the end of the seminar, Rick also answered all participants' questions about specific uses and how to use the software and support tools mentioned above. Participants also had the opportunity to discuss with each other and with Rick about the management experiences as well as the benefits of technology in project management.
