If Vietnamese’s companies wish to remain competitive, improving their leadership and management competencies is an issue that cannot be ignored. In order to be achieve that goal, there are several questions that need to be answered. How can leadership & management be defined? What good Leadership & Management is made of? And how competent are Vietnamese corporate leaders and managers compared with international peers?

At the event, all participants were given the Executive Report of “The state of Leadership & Management in Vietnam”. A 360 degree system (as known as Checkpoint 360) is used to identify leadership & management, and also presented the results which impressed and surprised all the attendants at the event:
-    Which leadership & management skills are considered important in Vietnam
-    In which areas do Vietnamese leaders & managers perform best and worst in comparison with global standards.

For this study, we collected 1,478 responses from 122 Vietnamese Managers and their: 187 Bosses 553 Direct reports, 545 Peers and 193 Others. The result shows the Vietnamese Leaders and Managers are committed members of their organisations, higly motivated, energetic and capable of accomplishing their required tasks. They have the potential to become great leaders. On the other hand, they still fall short of achieving real results as expected by their superiors. They tend to be stiff and do not adapt well enough to changing environment. Their most noticeable weakness, however, is the lack of people skills. All in all, Vietnamese managers fit well with “traditional” management styles, but would struggle to perform in a more dynamic, globalized environment.

Most of the participants are foreigners who play the important parts in businesses in Vietnam,  they found the chance to discuss with the speakers who are experts in managing and developing human resource,  about how to understand and develop the Vietnamese leaders/managers.
