On April 5th, a seminar with the topic "Outstanding Project Managers Have Mastered Key Skills and So can you!", hosted by Mr. Brian O’Reilly – Deputy Director of VGU’s Industrial Relations and Technology Transfer Center, and Mr. Rick Yvanovich - Founder & CEO of TRG International, has given participants the opportunity to learn more about the important and necessary skills in making up an outstanding project manager.

According to Brian, there are 9 “golden words” every single project manager need to remember:

Knowledge
Skills
Attitude
Cognitive
Technical
Soft
Leader
Follower
Situation

These “golden words” represent the "should-be" skills for a project leader. In addition to good knowledge (which is the top priority), a good project manager should always cultivate and develop himself ceaselessly. They also need to comprehend their own strengths, weaknesses and master other soft skills such as problem-solving, time management, conflict management, communication skills, etc. If they can master all of them, the path to success will not be far away.

Many participants were concerned about the cultural differences since they are expats working in Vietnam. To solve that problem, Brian shared from his own experience that people should learn from each other, simplify complex situations, and try your best to bring people together. Brian also emphasised “You never too old to learn" because no one is perfect.

At the end of the Talk, Rick shared some of his real experience working in Vietnam as an expat in order to help participants to be more confident in their work and life. According to Rick, expats living in Vietnam should learn to accept and integrate into a common culture so that they can work easily and effectively.
