November 27, 2019 - TRG Talk: Talent Management November with the topic "Getting the best from your team" lead by notable executive coach and trainer, Victor Burrill, and hosted by TRG International took place this morning. Through the Talk, more than once has Victor confirmed that empowerment is the key to effective leadership and leading high performing teams.

Our TRG Talk: Talent Management this month had the honour to welcome Mr Victor Burrill, a motivating executive coach, corporate trainer and consultant devoted to helping and developing others professionally and personally.

Joining this month’s TRG Talk, Victor hopes to empower the audience, who currently are leaders, to create high performing teams as well as to effectively lead their teams to higher grounds.

Managers versus Leaders, which one are you?

Using the comments from the audience about effective leaders, Victor agrees that to be a leader, one needs to have a vision and the ability to take others to a new place.

Unfortunately, many companies tend to have tons of managers and not enough leaders. According to Victor, leaders are greatly different from managers.

Two prominent factors to tell them apart are:

  • Managers develop followers. Leaders create leaders.
  • Managers rely on control. Leaders have long-range perspectives.

We often see managers are the ones that make all the possible decisions, and they prefer to retain that power solely for themselves. Leaders, on the other hand, delegate tasks, motivate their team members to reach higher goals, and trust that their staff will be able to achieve such goals.

As a result, high performing teams and employees often are the ones that are given the opportunity to accomplish their tasks and are rewarded appropriately afterward.

By giving your team room to breathe and opportunities to learn and grow, you can increase their level of engagement. An engaged team not only lowers your employee turnover rate but also boosts the overall productivity.

To clarify this point further, Victor and the audience discussed the case of Copa Airlines, the flag carrier of Panama.

"Being on time" is the goal that not only the top management level at Copa strives to achieve but also every employee that is currently working for the airline.

Copa is widely known as "one of the most profitable airline brands in the world." Their secret? Here are what our audience found out:

  • They focus on the customers and services they are offering.
  • The employees take charge of driving the company's goals.
  • They keep track of their performance and try to reach higher results over time.
  • Both the top management level and the employees have a continuous mindset.
  • Once they accomplished a goal, the staff at Copa celebrate accordingly (mostly with chicken and pizzas).

How to become an effective leader to lead a high performing team?

Victor once again directs the audience to discuss a case study about Emma Brandon, a Senior Charge Nurse that won the UK Best Boss Award.

Our participants concluded that not because Emma is a nurse that she is sympathetic towards others. Emma is genuinely humble, a characteristic that shines through her behaviour and in the words that she speaks.

When her colleagues and manager talk about her, they comment that she always listens to others. Even the patients feel happier at the hospital under Emma's leadership.

One of our participants added that Emma is passionate about her work, and thus, she emits a positive vibe onto those around her.
