HCMC, January 31st – Our very first TRG Talk of 2018 with the interesting topic “What makes a high-performing team?” was held at PJ’s Coffee. Our reputable speaker for the event was none other than Mr. Rick Yvanovich (Founder & CEO, TRG International). The talk opened up a robust discussion with lots of useful knowledge for all participants.
At the event, Rick emphasised that trust is one of the basic yet extremely important elements in creating a high-performing team. In addition, leaders who adopt an overly aggressive style or frequently show criticism to other’s ideas is the reason other members hesitate to voice their opinions and choose to agree with whatever the leader comes up with.
Therefore, Rick suggested leaders focus on building trust in order to build a high performing team.
There are two types of trust
1. Predictive Trust
This type of trust is based on the expectation that your team members will do the same things for you as you do to them. You trust them because they will give you exactly what you want. In returns, you also try your best to fulfil their expectations.
2. Vulnerability-based Trust
In order to achieve this level of trust, your entire team acknowledges and accepts each other weaknesses. Your members will be helping and supporting each other to overcome obstacles. For that reason, you do not need to be cautious with them which makes you completely trust in them.
Although the predictive trust, in theory, will bring a lot of advantages, it can cause many cover-ups and put a distance among your team members. On the other hand, you can open up your thoughts and feelings more with vulnerability-based trust.
Rick also suggested that to build trust, all team members must know the basic information of each other. For examples, where do they grow up, the number of siblings in their families, their special childhood memories, and how did that impact their life and career path?

Rick went on and stated that all various team building activities, such as team lunches and frequent meetups, are also great opportunities to connect and engage your members. The most important factor is the organisation has a caring, empathetic company culture and frequently evaluate it in the most scientific approach possible.
