On November 21st, TRG International and Amazon Website Services co-hosted TRG Talk on the topic "Cloud Enablement" at our regular meetup place - PJ's Coffee Sala. The event welcomed two speakers: Mr Thanh Nguyen - Cloud Services Director from TRG International, and Mr Vu Luu - Country Territory Manager from Amazon Web Services Vietnam.

What is Cloud?

Theoretically, Cloud computing is the on-demand delivery of computing power, database storage, applications, and other IT resources through a cloud services platform via the internet with pay-as-you-go pricing. But you can see Cloud Computing as a method for delivering IT services are retrieved from the Internet through web-based tools and applications. So now rather than keeping files on the hard drive or local storage, cloud-based storage makes it possible to save them to a remote database.

And as you can see in the line graph, the economics of the Cloud is very compelling and Opportunity cost is an important concept when discussing the economics of Cloud Computing because it allows one to assess the true cost of any potential action. If we include opportunity costs in any calculation, we can the differences between the various choices to be made.

With this explanation about Opportunity cost and the value to be gained by reducing that cost, we can apply the concept to a decision to either retain Traditional Hardware (on-premise) or move to the Cloud.

Pros an Cons of Cloud Computing

The rise of Cloud Computing has offered companies from all sectors a number of benefits, including the ability to use software and access data from any device, either via a native app of a browser. As a result, users are able to carry over their files and setting to other devices in a completely seamless manner. An example from Mr.Thanh is: When TRG consultants need to go abroad to set up the software systems for clients but their laptops are damaged after a long flight. In this case, thanks to Cloud Computing, they just need another computer and the internet connection to continue their work because all the data and software they need were in the cloud already.

Mr Thanh showed us a quick video made by AWS about Cloud and its benefits. Especially, with Cloud, you don’t have to move everything at the same time. In the beginning, you can move one of your systems on trial to understand how it works and see if it is suitable for you. All participants also enjoyed the live demo about Cloud to understand deeply how it works.

One of the participants asked about how secure Cloud is and Mr Thanh answer that AWS has security protocols in place to protect sensitive information and transactions. This prevents a third party from eavesdropping or tampering with data being transmitted. But the responsibility also belongs to the users, if you don’t secure your username and password then is your own mistake. So if you are at an office or shared network, you can ask the network administrator to run a scan across the network looking for misconfigured or infected devices.

TRG Talk Cloud takes place every month and acts as a knowledge sharing platform for individuals in every position to approach Cloud. At the same time, the talk also opened new opportunities for businesses who have been using Cloud to have a better understanding about the advantages, challenges, as well as the endless possibilities, and capabilities of Cloud.
